Our family was invited to check out IllumiZoo before it opened to the public so we can tell YOU all about it! IllumiZoo Wild Hues is a one-mile outdoor nighttime journey through the Zoo. This is the second year of IllumiZoo, but our first time!
The zoo wasn’t busy for our walk, so the lights and sounds were even more magical and relaxing. I would describe it as being in a magical dream land. Words my kids and I used to describe this experience were: Magical, Disco, Relaxing, Dreamlike, Surreal and even Scary (because it IS dark on some portions of the trail and we were there when there weren’t many other people).
IllumiZoo is the combined imaginations of Bluewater Technologies of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and John Ball Zoo.
Things to Know:
- This would be a fun adult / teen date night. I would go later so there aren’t as many kids.
- Lots of lightsabers, wands and light up hats available for purchase.
- With kids, it will take more than the hour I expected this to last. My kids stopped at all the interactive areas and didn’t want to leave. If there was an option to camp overnight, my kids would be all in.
- Animals will not be viewable during this nighttime experience (however, we heard birds, and saw the Lemurs sleeping!).
- Stroller and wheelchair friendly.
